flavour perception testing
An innovative solution for the early detection and monitoring of neurodegenerative diseases using flavour perception testing.
This groundbreaking new device is:
Sensitive enough to detect brain degeneration from a person’s ability to smell and taste
Simple enough for clinicians, carers, and patients to use
Affordable enough that every doctors surgery, care home, community centre or patient could have one
Early diagnosis is key
New Alzheimer’s Drugs
New drugs are being developed that can slow, or even repair the effects of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. These drugs are only effective where the disease is detected early.
Inclusive
A solution is needed that provides widespread early screening of the population to measure, over time, flavour perception and provide further testing should there be noticeable decline. This screening will also provide the first use of big data to determine whether Alzheimer’s sufferers are more likely to occur in certain demographics, thus improving our knowledge and treatment of the disease.
Analysis
Flavour perception is far more statistically valid than standard cognitive tests, and loss of flavour perception can occur months or years before they would be recognised in current tests.
The flavour perception process
A real flavour is analysed to extract its taste, aroma, mouthfeel and colour
An equivalent virtual flavour is recreated from these components using UK Food Standards Agency approved food safe chemicals
Because it is a simulation every component can be added to, or subtracted from, to create new flavours
About Us
Goal
Our goal is to provide flavour perception devices to doctors surgeries, care homes community centres and even to people’s homes, to provide regular testing and benchmarking versus persons of a similar age. These results can be used by clinicians to determine whether further, more invasive tests need to be carried out.
Device
Our patented flavour device dispenses an exact quantity of a flavour to a cup. All flavours are Food Safety approved and the process is simple, hygienic and quick.
Team
The team is an experienced blend of commercial, electrical engineering, research and software engineering and has an advisory board bringing relevant skills such as neurology, economics and data analysis.
